Paw & Order: Friends of Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce is a 501c3 nonprofit organization which provides financial assistance and resources to help maximize the overall efforts of the Harris County Animal Cruelty Taskforce. The Taskforce aims to uphold its core values; to receive and investigate animal cruelty county-wide, educate the public on the importance of reporting animal cruelty and its correlation to other types of crimes and to maintain a central and specialized resource for animal cruelty complaints. The ultimate goal is to streamline the reporting process and provide help to animals in need as quickly as possible.

Since the inception of the Taskforce in early 2018 over 3,800 animal cruelty reports have been received, a significant jump since previous years. The Harris County District Attorney's Office has gone on to file over 200 charges.

All funding will go directly toward serving the immediate needs of the Taskforce. The list includes, but is not limited to: Medical and housing for cruelty cases not recovered via restitution, diagnostic equipment, training animal cruelty investigators, field equipment such as catchpoles, leashing, gloves, microchip scanners, infrared thermometers, Tyvek suits and digital cameras.

What is Animal Cruelty?

Animal Cruelty – either deliberate abuse or simply the failure to take care of an animal.

The animals whose abuse is most often reported are dogs, cats, horses and livestock.

Based on the 1,423 U.S. cruelty cases on pet-abuse.com’s 2011 digest in which species of the victim was specified:

  • 70.1% involved dogs.

  • 20.9% involved cats.

  • 24.1% involved other animals.

Animal cruelty manifests in many forms. From the child who throws rocks at a cat, to the backyard breeder who churns out puppies for cash, to the circus trainer who beats and prods an elephant performer. By being able to educate others on how to identify animal cruelty, we can be better advocates to animals.
